How to Become a Model in Australia

A new model photographed in natural light against a plain wall

Australia runs a small, professional modelling industry with a persistent scam problem around its edges. Knowing how the legitimate side works is most of what protects you from the rest.

Our instructors are the Australian agents, casting directors and runway producers who make these decisions. This is the local version of the process.

The Australian Market in One Paragraph

Sydney is the biggest market and holds most of the fashion work, including Australian Fashion Week. Melbourne is strong commercially and has its own fashion culture. Brisbane and the Gold Coast own swim, resort and tourism. Perth and Adelaide are smaller commercial markets. Across all of them, commercial and catalogue work is where the money is — fashion is the visible part, not the profitable part.

Our complete guide to Australian modelling agencies maps each city in detail.

Step 1: Find Your Board

Step 2: Measurements, in Centimetres

Australian agencies work in centimetres. Height, bust or chest, waist, hips, dress or suit size, shoe size, hair and eye colour. Measure properly — agencies remeasure, and a discrepancy is noticed.

Step 3: Digitals, Not a Photoshoot

Four to six photos on a phone, in daylight, against a plain wall. Front, side, back, one smiling, one neutral, plus a close-up. No makeup, no filters, no retouching, hair down. Fitted plain clothing.

This costs nothing. Anyone telling you that you need a professional portfolio before an Australian agency will look at you is selling photography.

Step 4: Target the Right Agencies

Shortlist agencies that run your board, in a city you can actually reach for castings. City guides: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth.

Verify each one the same way: commission-based rather than fee-based, traceable clients and campaigns, models on the board who visibly work, a real office.

Step 5: Submit and Attend Open Calls

Follow each agency's submission instructions exactly. Then go to open calls — they remain the most direct route into a room with an Australian booker, and expect the whole thing to take two to five minutes.

Scams Specific to the Australian Market

Australian Consumer Law gives you real protection, and legitimate agencies have no issue with you taking a contract home to read it. Anyone pressuring you to sign on the spot has told you what they are.

How Money Works Here

Australian bookings are quoted as a day rate plus a usage fee covering where the images run and for how long. Usage is frequently the larger figure. Your agency deducts commission and generally charges the client a separate booking fee.

You should never be out of pocket to be represented. Real early costs are casting travel, basic grooming and any training you choose — see what it actually costs.

Going Overseas

Plenty of Australian models eventually work in Asia, Europe or the US, usually through a placement arranged by their Australian agency with a partner agency abroad. That is the normal route, and it typically follows a period of consistent local work rather than preceding it. Build a book and a track record here first.

What to Do This Week

Measure yourself, shoot your digitals, decide your board honestly, shortlist three or four Australian agencies that actually represent it, and submit exactly what they ask for.

Then learn what happens inside a casting room, because that is what separates models who book once from models who get rebooked. Our free runway masterclass with Jack Bedwani — who produces Australian Fashion Week — is six lessons of exactly that, and it costs nothing.
