Building a Model Portfolio Website That Works

Most advice about model portfolio websites is written by people selling website builders. The genuinely useful version starts with a question almost nobody asks: who is going to look at this, and what do they need from it?

Answer that, and the whole thing becomes simple.

Do You Even Need One?

If you are represented by an agency, probably not urgently. Your agency hosts your book, controls how you are presented, and takes enquiries. Clients go to the agency, not to you, and an agency will generally prefer it that way.

A personal site earns its place when:

If none of those apply, put the effort into your book and your digitals instead.

What It Needs

A homepage that loads instantly and shows one strong image

No splash screen, no autoplay music, no animated intro. A client clicking your link wants to see your face inside two seconds. Anything between them and that is friction.

A curated gallery, 12 to 20 images

This is the whole site, really. Choose images that each show something different: clean beauty, full-length, commercial lifestyle, editorial, and whatever is specific to your board — swim, activewear, parts.

The discipline is in what you leave out. A client scanning 60 photos concludes you cannot tell which of your images are good, which is a worse signal than having fewer.

Your measurements

Height, bust or chest, waist, hips, dress or suit size, shoe size, hair and eye colour. Same data as your comp card, same requirement to be accurate.

A contact route that keeps you safe

Your agency's details if you are represented. A dedicated work email if you are not. Never your phone number, never your home address, and nothing that identifies your suburb, your gym or your regular routine.

What to Leave Out

The Technical Bits That Matter

The platform matters far less than the curation. Any of the mainstream builders will do this well enough.

How It Fits With Everything Else

You end up with four assets doing four different jobs, and confusing them is the most common mistake:

Our guide to building a modeling portfolio covers the book in detail, and portfolio examples shows what strong selections actually look like.

Start Simple

One page, one strong image, fifteen well-chosen photos, your stats, and a safe contact route. That will outperform an elaborate site with weak curation every time — and it takes an afternoon rather than a month.
